Indoor air quality investigations use different sensors for different questions. This is a buying guide, not a catalog of what is on the shelf.
VOC meter
A VOC meter screens the air for volatile organic compounds. It is a field check, not a laboratory report. If the job names an EPA or ISO method, pair this meter with an air sampling pump.
Formaldehyde meter
A formaldehyde meter reads formaldehyde on its own. Building air tests list formaldehyde as a separate contaminant from total VOCs. Keep this kit distinct from a broad VOC meter.
Particle counter
A particle counter measures dust in the air by size or as PM10 and PM2.5. A complete kit includes the meter, the probe, and a zero filter. A cleanroom counter is a different class of instrument.
Carbon monoxide meter
A carbon monoxide meter reads CO in occupied space. Building tests often cap CO at 9 ppm and not more than 2 ppm above the outdoor reading. A combustion analyzer does more than this meter and is not a substitute listing.
Air sampling pump
An air sampling pump pulls a known volume of air through laboratory media. The pump is the field tool. The lab does the chemistry. Media is consumable and is not assumed to be in the case unless the listing says it is.
We consider suitable tools from many makers. A name alone does not tell us whether an instrument has the sensors and accessories an IAQ investigation needs.
